Solar system size calculator

Pick what you want to keep running and roughly how much grid you get. This works out a solar system in that direction — panels, battery, inverter — and a rough installed cost, using the same maths as our full intake. No sign-up.

All-in, standard components, about 8 hours of backup. This is an order-of-magnitude estimate from a few inputs — not a quotation. A real figure comes from an installer who has seen your roof, wiring and meter.

How it works out the numbers

Your appliance list gives a daily energy figure and a peak-load figure. The battery is sized to carry the part of that list you want on backup through about eight hours, plus a margin for depth-of-discharge and inverter losses. The panels are sized to refill that battery in your city's daylight hours, scaled by how much your grid band is expected to cover. The inverter is rounded up to a standard size that covers the largest simultaneous load and the biggest motor surge.

It is deliberately conservative — bands under-deliver against their targets in practice, so the maths assumes they do. The full guide to sizing walks through the same logic in words.

Questions

Is this the same as getting a quote?

No. This gives you a direction — roughly how much panel, battery and inverter, and an order-of-magnitude cost. A quotation is itemised, at real brand prices, from an installer who has seen your roof, wiring and meter. Use this to walk into that conversation informed.

Why does my feeder band matter?

Your NERC band sets a guaranteed minimum of daily grid supply. Fewer guaranteed hours means the system carries more of the day itself — so it needs more battery to get through the night and more panel to refill by day. Two identical appliance lists on different bands can need systems that differ by half.

What do kW, kWh and kVA mean?

Panels are sized in kW (kilowatts) — how much they generate. Battery is sized in kWh (kilowatt-hours) — how much energy it stores. The inverter is sized in kVA — it has to cover everything that might be running at the same moment, plus the surge when a fridge or pump starts.

How accurate is the cost?

It's order-of-magnitude — all-in rates for standard components (budget mono panels, a generic lithium battery, a Felicity/Luminous-class hybrid inverter). Your real price moves with the brands you choose, your roof, the wiring run and the installer. Premium equipment can be well above the range shown.
